The Philadelphia Award

celebrate & honor 100 years of community icons

The Philadelphia Award turned 100 in 2021, marking a century of honoring those who used their diverse talents to shape both our city and our world. The work my team did on this book makes me especially proud because it was our chance to work in a somewhat unusual format and showcase our full range of capabilities in a printed work. While I worked closely with a writer on the book contents, our design team spent hundreds of pro bono hours on photo selection, layout, and cover design. Working with researchers, we maintained a massive database of historical photographs and threw ourselves into every city archive (online and in print) to learn about these local icons.

The structure of the book and much of its first chapter were created by me (working with a designer) to be replicated in format and style throughout by other team members.

THE BOOK

CHAPTER intro.

Big, bold introductions to each decade, teaser photography from the period, and some light commentary on what was happening in the US and around the world for historical context.

STANDARD RECIPIENT PAGES.

A clean, image-heavy layout featuring two past recipients, their year, and notes on their achievements. The majority of the 100+ pages are in this format, allowing us to pack a lot of history into a single book.

FEATURE PAGE.

Where more interesting imagery existed, our lead designer (Shawn Gorman, Athena) did incredible colorization work to breathe new life into old, black and white photos.
